AlpArray is a European initiative to advance our understanding of orogenesis and its relationship to mantle dynamics, plate reorganizations, surface processes and seismic hazard in the collision zone between the Adriatic and the Eurasian plate. The complex oregenic system includes the Alps, the Apennines, the Carpathians and the Dinarides.

55 institution from 17 countries participating in the AlpArray initiative. Germany's contribution is organised in a  Priority Programme entitled “Mountain Building Processes in Four Dimensions” (SPP 2017).

The subproject "Generation and Destruction of the Ligurian Sea" focus on the processes within the Ligurian Sea which is situated between the Alpine orogen and the Apennines. 29 broadband ocean bottom seiomsometer (OBS) were deployed for 8 month between June 2017 and February 2018 with the goal to record local, regional and teleseimic earthquakes.
