SPP 1630 Harbours: Central Geophysical Project

The aim of the central geophysical project in the SPP 1630 is the prospection of archaeological sites located in the transition zone from land to water. For the prospection of this amphibious zone, already established geophysical measuring methods (magnetics, electrics, georadar) can be used with certain limitations off the shore line on the land and water side. Especially for the amphibious area new methods shall be developed and applied. Locations where measurements were and will be carried out are Iceland, the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coast (in particular Rungholt and Nordfriesland and Reric), the Rhine, Italy, Poland, Greenland, the Karlsgraben, as well as a location in Turkey.

The geophysical prospection of archaeological sites on land has reached a high level on the metrological side. By combining geophysical sensors, equipment carriers and positioning systems, it is now possible to measure even large settlement sites with the required spatial resolution. The backbone of prospection is undoubtedly geomagnetic mapping, typically carried out with sensor arrays, but often supplemented by georadar, geoelectrics or electromagnetic induction measurements (EMI).

However, the geophysical measuring methods known from archaeometry on land can only be transferred to shallow water to a limited extent. Geophysics for the amphibious range is in a development phase, both in terms of scientific methodology and technology. Therefore already established measuring methods are to be used from the beginning for the project work and in parallel however the methodology is to be developed scientifically and technically new and/or further.
